State Capitol
The Texas State Capitol is located in Austin, Texas, and is the fourth building to be the house of Texas state government in Austin. It houses the chambers of the Texas Legislature and the office of the governor of Texas. It was originally designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, and was constructed from 1882 to 1888 under the direction of civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker. Sited on one of Austin's highest points, the Capitol anchors the northern periphery of the downtown commercial district and commands a sweeping view towards the Colorado River from its southern façade. The main campus of The University of Texas at Austin is situated four blocks to the north. The mission of Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education. Last year, over 175,000 people visited Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary. The zoo became a nonprofit organization. Today, the zoo and sanctuary is home to mostly exotic animals that were rescued from or unwanted by their owners, animals from other zoos and sanctuaries, and animals who were awarded protection through the judicial system.
Lady Bird Lake and Hike and Bike Trail
Lady Bird Lake is a reservoir on the Colorado River in downtown Austin, Texas, in the United States. It was created in 1960 by the construction of Longhorn Dam and is owned and operated by the City of Austin and the Lower Colorado River Authority. The surface area of the lake is 416 acres, and it is used primarily for flood control and recreation. Located on the lake's shoreline are various hotels and apartments, as well as the Auditorium Shores park and the Austin Hike and Bike Trail. The main stretch of bars extends from Sabine to Lavaca Streets and are mainly frequented by the college crowd and can get rowdy. On West 6th Street, just east of Lamar, there is a group of bars that tend to be a little more upscale and attract the young professional crowd, and things are a little calmer.
