Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. Situated on the Timor Sea. It is the smallest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities, and acts as the Top End's regional centre. Darwin was razed by a cyclone. Its unique past and present lends modern day Darwin a very human spirit. It’s palpable daily in the city’s many outdoor public spaces, where crowds mingle at makeshift markets, at restaurants and pubs, and at its numerous festivals. Darwin has grown from a pioneer outpost and small port into one of Australia's most modern and multicultural cities. Its proximity to Asia makes it an important Australian gateway to countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin, ending at Port Augusta in South Australia. The city itself is built on a low bluff overlooking the harbour. Its suburbs spread out over some area, beginning at Lee Point in the north and stretching to Berrimah in the east past Berrimah, the Stuart Highway goes on to Darwin's satellite city, Palmerston, and its suburbs. The city is noted for its consistently warm to hot climate, all throughout the year. It receives heavy rainfall during the Wet, and is well known for its spectacular lightning.

Botanic Gardens

The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens are botanical gardens located 2 km North of the CBD of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The gardens cover 42 hectares and are noted for their collections of north Australian and other tropical species. The Darwin Botanic Gardens contain waterfalls, tropical rainforest, fountains, forest walks, playing areas for kids of all ages and the original Darwin Wesleyan Church. The gardens started as a site for experimenting with economically viable plants in 1886, when Darwin was only 16 years old. Labour was supplied by prisoners, mainly Aboriginal, with the occassional European and Chinese ander the direction of father Maurice and then son Nicholas Holtze.

Casuarina Beach

Casuarina Beach is one of the most popular in Darwin, extending from Rapid Creek through Casuarina to Lee Point. The Casuarina Beach in Karainagar is also called and written as Casoorina, Cashoorina and few other variants. This is said to be the best beach in the Jaffna Peninsula. One can walk a long way in the deep blue water with gentle waves moving towards the land. The beach probably got its name due the Casuarina Trees along the beach.

Litchfield National Park

Litchfield National Park, with lush forests, spectacular waterfalls, a wading pool is sparkling and termite mound towering is an increasingly popular tourist destination of Darwin. Litchfield National Park, covering approximately 1500 km2, is near the township of Batchelor, 100 km south west of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Each year the park attracts over 260,000 visitors. Proclaimed a national park in 1986, it is named after Frederick Henry Litchfield, a Territory pioneer, who explored areas of the Northern Territory from Escape Cliffs on the Timor Sea to the Daly River in 1864.

Fannie Bay Gaol

Fannie Bay Gaol is a historic gaol in Darwin, Australia. The last executions in Darwin were held at Fannie Bay Gaol in 1952, when Jerry Coci and Jonus Nopoty, Romanian immigrants, were hanged for the murder of a taxi driver. The gallows were constructed especially for this execution, in the infirmary. A pit was dug into the floor at one end of the building, with brick walls either side to support the beam. A small trapdoor and flight of steps led down into the pit for the doctor to examine the bodies after the drop. The prisoners were held in wire cages at the other end of the infirmary prior to execution. The gallows remain on public view, and visitors can push the lever that operated the trap.

Darwin Museum

The Ranger Uranium Mine, one of the most productive Uranium mines in the world, is surrounded by but separate from the park.

Tiwi Islands

The Tiwi Islands are part of Australia's Northern Territory, north of Darwin where the Arafura Sea joins the Timor Sea. They comprise Melville Island and Bathurst Island. Inhabited before European settlement by the Tiwi indigenous Australians, there are approximately 2500 people on the islands. The Tiwi Land Council is one of four in the Northern Territory. In the Tiwi Island you will find lush rainforests, sandy beaches and rock pools which are Tiwi Islands landscape. Tiwi people have lived in the Islands for thousands of years and their lives have been greatly influenced by the Catholic mission on Bathurst Island was built in 1911. It is a representative body with statutory authority under the Aboriginal Land Rights and has responsibilities under the Native Title Act 1993 and the Pastoral Land Act 1992.

Glass lifts to Wave Pool

Walk to the Wave Pool from the Darwin Mall or the Bus Stop in Harry Chan Ave in about 10 minutes, enjoying the spectacular view of Stokes Hill Wharf from the glass lifts and skywalk. This photo shows the Knuckey Street end of the Smith Street Mall, if you are on your first day in town, it should be easy to find. Midway down the Darwin Mall. The Mall covers Smith Street from Knuckey Street to Bennet Street, where Snith St becomes a normal road again.

Darwin Rain Forest

The area has a colourful history, site of the first freshwater well in the new settlement established by George Goyder in 1869, but today is a quiet boardwalk through dense rain forest. This Darwin City rain forest in Doctors Gully is an unexpected bonus to anyone visiting the fish feeding or walking down from the Esplanade. The easy way there if you are on foot is to walk down behind the bus stop outside the YWCA in Mitchel St. A short walk takes you from a busy street to a long stairway leading to a dense forest area.

East Point Reserve

East Point is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. East Point, Lee Point and Point Charles all appear on Goyder’s original plan of Port Darwin in 1869. This point, the easterly extremity of the entrance to Darwin Harbour has been used for a variety of purposes. It was used during the War (1942-46), a post war golf course and currently a recreation reserve. The area was heavily fortified during the war, with several large guns designed to protect Darwin Harbour.

Fannie Bay Beach

Fannie Bay is a middle inner suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Situated in the suburb is the Fannie Bay Gaol museum, Fannie Bay Race Track and a monument to Ross Smith, captain of the Vickers Vimy that, in December 1919, was the first aircraft to fly from England to Australia in less than 30 days. Fannie Bay Beach is part of the East Point Reserve with BBQ facilities, playgrounds and white sands next to the man made Lake Alexander. Adjoining the suburb is the East Point Reserve, containing Lake Alexander, a Military Museum and gun emplacements from the Second World War. A great many places in the Northern Territory were named by John McDouall Stuart for members of the Chambers family, who sponsored his expeditions.
