Downtown is located in the center of the Las Vegas Valley and just north of the Las Vegas Strip, centered around Fremont Street, the Fremont Street Experience and Fremont East. This water made the area an important water stop and was instrumental in the building of a railroad through the area around 1905. Lake Mead and Hoover Dam

This is one of the most popular excursions from Las Vegas. Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, and is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 25 mi southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year.

Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil is a Canadian entertainment company, self described. Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and located in the inner city area of Saint Michel, it was founded in Baie Saint Paul in 1984 by two former street performers, Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier. Initially named Les Echassiers, they toured Quebec in 1980 as a performing troupe and encountered financial hardship that was relieved by a government grant in 1983 as part of the 450th anniversary celebrations of Jacques Cartier's discovery of Canada. Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil was a success in 1984, and after securing a second year of funding, Laliberte hired Guy Caron from the National Circus School to recreate it as a proper circus. Its theatrical, character driven approach and the absence of performing animals helped define Cirque du Soleil as the contemporary circus that it remains today.
