Holiday Destination: Liberia City

Liberia is the capital and largest city of Guanacaste province, Costa Rica, located (215 km) northwest of the national capital, San José. Liberia is often called la ciudad blanca by its residents because of the white gravel once used to make the city’s roads and the whitewashed colonial houses that once made up a large part of the city. In 1812 the Cádiz Cortes created the providence of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Nicaragua and Costa Rica got independence from Spain on September 15, 1821 after the Spanish defeat in the Mexican War of Independence. The Partido de Nicoya served as an administrative unit for the Federal Republic of Central America. The Partido de Nicoya compromised of much of the territory that today is the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Most of the area, such as the settlements of Nicoya and Santa Cruz, held economic ties to Costa Rican territory like the growing port of Puntarenas. The settlement of Guanacaste, on the other hand, held closer economic ties to Nicaraguan territory like the town of Rivas.

Tourist Attraction in or Near by Liberia

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano

Rincón de la Vieja is an active andesitic complex volcano in north-western Costa Rica, about 25 km from Liberia, in the province of Guanacaste. Its name means 'The Old Woman's Corner', a reference to a local legend about a girl whose lover was thrown into the crater by her father; she became a recluse living on the mountain, and was credited with powers of healing. Rincón de la Vieja stands 1,916 mt above sea level, and its summit is the highest point in Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park. It erupted most recently in September 2011. The volcano has a large number of fumaroles and hot springs on its slopes. It is formed by felsic lava. Rincón de la Vieja is one of six active Costa Rican volcanoes: the others are Poás, Irazú, Miravalles, Arenal, and Turrialba.

Nightlife in Liberia Costa Rica

The most popular dance club in Liberia for the younger crowds is Kuru. This dance club, located just outside of the city on the other side of the red light, gets more crowded on the outside as cars and people line up to see who is out and about and purchase drinks from the outdoor bar service. The entrance fee is about $4 on the weekends and the music is a variety of typical latin beats from merengue to cumbia to reggaeton. Across the street from Kuru is the gay friendly Bar de Luna. This bar is open until past sunrise, and is where most people choose to end the night. The music is great for dancing, and there is rarely a cover charge.

Hidden Garden Art Gallery

The Hidden Garden Art Gallery offers quality original art in many mediums as well as museum quality Giclee prints. HG is the largest of its kind in Guanacaste, more than 60 artists on exhibit, and 14 rooms full of paintings, sculptures and diverse artistic expressions. The gallery has 3,500 square feet of wall space, and more than 400 pieces on display. Rooms are coordinated by styles, ranging from geometric abstraction, to typical art, to underwater images. The Gallery is also home to the only permanent exhibition of our resident artist, Carlos Hiller, with more than two rooms dedicated solely to his works.

Coco Beach

Coco Beach Costa Rica is only 40 km west of Liberia. You might ask 'why is this important?' The international airport in Liberia makes this an easy to access beach. And, Liberia's airport makes a great alternative to the airport in San Jose. Coco Beach, Playas del Coco, is the largest village in the state of Guanacaste. Because it is close to Liberia, many international vacationers come for short visits. Coco Beach Costa Rica is also popular with locals. As a result, Playas del Coco has good services, amenities and infrastructure.

Lake Piso

Lake Piso, also known as Lake Pisu and Fisherman's Lake, is an oblong tidal lagoon in Grand Cape Mount County in western Liberia, near the town of Robertsport. At an area of 103 km2, it is the largest lake in Liberia. Its name originates from a local term meaning pigeon's hole a reference to the flocks of pigeons that once came to Lake Piso for water. Lake Piso overflowed its banks at least twice in 1998, causing heavy flooding in Garwular District. Flooding in August 1998 occurred due to a blockage of the narrow inlet connecting the lake to the Atlantic Ocean, damaging some homes.[9] Additional flooding in September and October, brought about by heavy rains, affected over twenty settlements, causing at least ten deaths, leaving thousands homeless, and forcing others to leave their homes.

Providence Island

Isla de Providencia or Old Providence is a mountainous Caribbean island. Though it is closer to Nicaragua, it is part of the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina, a department of Colombia, lying midway between Costa Rica and Jamaica. Providencia's maximum elevation is 360m above sea level. The smaller Santa Catalina Island is connected by a 100 metre footbridge to its larger sister Providencia Island. The island was the site of an English Puritan colony established in 1629 by the Providence Island Company, and was briefly taken by Spain in 1641. The infamous pirate Henry Morgan used Providencia as a base for raiding the Spanish empire, and rumours suggest that much of his treasure remains hidden on the island. Many parts of the island are named after Morgan. Forts and cannons dating back hundreds of years can be found scattered all over Santa Catalina Island.
