Jeronimos Monastery

The Hieronymites Monastery Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Portuguese pronunciation is located near the shore of the parish of Belém, in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. The monastery is one of the most prominent monuments of the Manueline style architecture in Lisbon, classified in 1983 as a World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém. The chapel that existed there, to the invocation of Santa Maria de Belém, was serviced by monks of the military religious Order of Christ who provided assistance to pilgrims who transited the area. The small beach of Praia do Restelo was an advantage spot, with safe anchorage and protection from the winds,sought after by the ships that entered the Tagus.

Ponte 25 de Abril

The 25 de Abril Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left bank of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966 and a train platform was added in 1999. Because of being a cable stayed bridge and its similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. In fact, it was built by the same company that constructed the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge and not the Golden Gate, also explaining its similarity in design. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 21st largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper platform carries six car lanes, and the lower platform carries two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge.

Campo Pequeno

The Campo Pequeno Bullring is the bull ring of Lisbon, Portugal. It is located in the Campo Pequeno Square, by the Avenida da República. Praca de Touros do Campo Pequeno is Lisbon's bull ring and the stadium is styled to resemble to grand Moroccan castle with high red brick walls topped with giant domed structures. The architecture of Campo Pequeno is unique for Lisbon while the stadium hosts the less brutal Portuguese style of bull fighting. After a profound renovation, it re opened as a multi event venue in 2006, designed to be used for various events apart from bull fighting. It hosts a range of live acts and has seen many famous bands perform there. It includes an underground shopping centre, restaurants and a parking lot.

Igreja de São Roque

The Igreja de São Roque in Lisbon was the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world, and one of the first Jesuit churches anywhere. It served as the Society’s home church in Portugal for over 200 years, before the Jesuits were expelled from that country. After the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, the church and its ancillary residence were given to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa to replace their church and headquarters which had been destroyed. It remains a part of the Santa Casa today, one of its many heritage buildings. The Igreja de São Roque was one of the few buildings in Lisbon to survive the Earthquake relatively unscathed. When built in the 16th century it was the first Jesuit church designed in the auditorium church style specifically for preaching. It contains a number of chapels, most in the Baroque style of the early 17th century.

Igreja de Santo António

The Santo António Church is located in Lisbon, Portugal. It is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Lisbon, best known around the Christian world as Saint Anthony of Padua. According to tradition, the church was built on the site where the saint was born, in 1195. The site of the family house where Fernando was born, located very close to Lisbon Cathedral, was turned into a small chapel in the 15th century. This early building, from which nothing remains, was rebuilt in the early 16th century, during the reign of King Manuel I. The Lisbon Senate was located on a house just beside the chapel. A religious brotherhood dedicated to the saint was founded in the 16th century.

Lisbon Acquarium

The Oceanarium is an oceanarium in Lisbon, Portugal. It is located in the Parque das Nações. It has a huge 5000 cubic metre tank and you can view the fish from many different angles and terrains. It also has zones around this main tank with different habitats for other types of fish. Feeding times are a lot of fun for kids especially. The watefront and whole area around the site was remodelled for the Expo and has some fantastic architecture and pieces of modern art.

Parque das Nações

Parque das Nações is a leisure, commercial, and residential area in Lisbon, Portugal. It covers an extensive area in northeastern Lisbon next to the Tagus estuary, formerly used for mainly industrial purposes. The area underwent a tremendous transformation in the 1990s when it was chosen as the location for the Expo '98 World Exhibition. After the exhibition, the area got its current name, and more transformations occurred such as the new Vasco da Gama shopping mall, the Lisbon's International Fair complex, hotels and many new office and residential buildings. Many attractions built for the Expo '98 remained and keep drawing visitors, such as the Oceanarium, one of the world's biggest aquariums. Taking advantage of its geographical position, Parque das Nações is also proud of its brand new Marina. Marina Parque das Nações features 600 berths and modern infrastructures, a river pier for cruises or historical vessels, and an exclusive pontoon prepared to receive nautical and on land events.

Belém Tower

Belém Tower is a fortified tower located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It is an World Heritage Site because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and the 30 mt, four story tower. It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

The Sé de Lisboa Cathedral

The Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Mary Major is a Roman Catholic parish church located in Lisbon, Portugal. The oldest church in the city is the see of the Archdiocese of Lisbon. Since the beginning of the construction of the cathedral, in the year 1147, the building has been modified several times and survived many earthquakes. It is nowadays a mix of different architectural styles. The solid and imposing Sé de Lisboa was constructed in an era when there was a constant threat of invasion and the cathedral was designed to be the last lines of defence for Lisbon. The Se cathedral has been intertwined in Portuguese history, since the dawn of the country and no visit to Lisbon is complete without visiting the cathedral of lisbon.

Castelo de São Jorge

The Castle of São Jorge is a Moorish castle that occupies a commanding position overlooking the city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and the broad Tagus River beyond. The strongly fortified citadel, which, in its present configuration, dates from medieval times, is located atop the highest hill in the historic center of the city. The castle is one of the main historical and touristic sites of Lisbon. The battlements of Castelo de São Jorge provides fantastic views of the Baixa district and the Rio Tejo while the fortified citadel is steeped in history.
